Prof. K. Muraleedhara Varier

Prof. K. Muraleedhara Varier is a well known physicist and academician and a retired Professor of Physics at the University of Calicut. He was born on May 26th, 1950 in Mariyappalli in the district of Kottayam. He was the son of (Late) Professor P. U. Krishna Warrier, Jyothisha Pandithan and Jyothirganitha Paramacharyan and Professor of Mathematics, NSS College, Thiruvananthapuram and Perunna, and (Late) Sreemati Lakshmikkutty Amma of Vadakkedathu Warriam, Mariyappalli. (Late) Sreemati P. L. Leelavathy, wife of famous poet and Astrologer (Late) Sri Pandanattil Gopala Warrier, was his eldest sister. The famous Jyothirganithacharyan and Jyothisrestan (Retired Professor of Physics) Dr. K. Balakrishna Warrier, (Retired) BSNL Deputy General Manager, Sri. K. Venugopala Warrier, (Retired) Middle Management Grade II (MMGS) in State Bank Sri. K. Sreekumara Varier and (Retired) NTPC Addl. General Manager Sri. K. Gopalakrishna Warrier are his brothers.

Prof. Varier is married to Dr. P. Girijakumary (Homoeo Doctor), daughter of (Late) Sri. Gopinatha Warrier (Vadakkedathu Warriam, Mariyappalli) and (Late) Sreemati Parukkutty amma (Panachikkad Warriam, Panachikkad). Girija had a long term service as a private Homoeo doctor in the Calicut University campus. Their daughter, Anjana, works as a Senior Fire and Life Safety Engineer, and her husband, Dr. Anoop, works as a Project Manager (Performance-Based Design Projects) at Xeluxe Fire Safety, Dubai. Anoop is the son of Sree Subramania Warrier and Sreemati Shyamala, Saouparnika, Konchiravila, Thiruvananthapuram. They have two sons, Adwaith and Aadith, who are currently pursuing their school education in Dubai.

Anjana completed her schooling at St. Paul’s School, Thenjipalam, Malappuram District, and Calicut Airport School, Malappuram. She earned her B.Tech in ECE from Calicut University (CUIET) and later completed her M.Tech in Power Electronics from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru.

Dr. Anoop holds a B.Tech in Fire and Safety (CUSAT, Kochi), an M.Tech (IMFSE - Ghent University, Belgium; Lund University, Sweden; and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland), and a PhD in Fire and Safety (University of Lancashire, UK).

Prof. Varier's younger son, Dr. Gopikrishnan is working as Head, Quantum Algorithms and Applications Research in the Canadian based company BTQ Technologies in Sydney. He is married to Srimati Meera, daughter of Mohana Varier and Suja (Sivasakthi, Kilimanoor. She has just completed her MS by Research degree in the McQuaire university. They have one son Nitant, a first standard student. Gopikrishnan had his schooling in the St. Pauls School, Thenjipalam, Malappuram District and Calicut Airport School, Malappuram. He took his BS-MS degree in Pbysics from IISER, Thiruvananthapuram and PhD from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, USA.

Served as Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Los Alamos Lab, USA and later at the Department of Physics, McQuarie University, Sydney. Meera did her schooling in Kilimanoor, BSc in Physics from NSS College, Nilamel and MSc in Physics from SB College, Changanassery. Also took MS degree from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexixo, USA.

Prof. Varier had his school education in Perunnai N.S.S. College. Took BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from Kerala University and PhD degree from Mumbai IIT. Later had post doctoral research fellowship at IIT, Kanpur. Joined as Lecturer in Physics in Department of Physics, University of Calicut in 1980. Promoted to Reader in 1988 and later to Professor in 1996. Retired from University as Head of the Department in 2010 after 30 years of meritorious service. During this period he also held the positions of member and Chairman of PG Boards of studies of the Calicut University as also member of Boards of studies of other universities. He was also Dean of Faculty of Sciences and member of several other academic and administrative bodies of the University such as Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Inspection Committees appointed by the University in connection with awarding of new courses in the affiliated colleges etc. and also for a short term as Director of Paramedical courses run by the University of Calicut.

During his tenure as a teacher in the university Prof. Varier also continued his basic research activities in the university as well as at other scientific research institutes like IIT Mumbai and Kanpur, TIFR and BARC Mumbai, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, Institute of Physics (Bhubaneswar), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam etc. He was awarded the UGC National Research Associateship for three years. He also had a long collaboration with the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, which is an Inter-University research institute under the University Grants Commission, Government of India. where he was also member of the Accelerator User Committee and Board of Governors of IUAC.

His research activities also included guiding MSc and MPhil students for their research dissertations and also PhD students. Twelve researchers successfully completed their doctoral research under his able guidance. Arising out of his active and devoted research work he has been able to publish more than sixty research papers in several national and international research journals.

Prof. Varier had also post doctoral research experience at the Legnaro National Lab, Italy under an INFN,Italy (a government organization similar to the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India) fellowship. He also participated and presented research papers in national and international conferences in India as well as abroad in Texas, USA (1984), Dubrovnik, Croatia (1991) and ANU, Canberra, Australia (1997).

As part of his academic and research career, Prof Varier had visited several academic and research institutions like Chandigar University, Chandigar, Central University Kannur, MG University, Kottayam, Universities of Kerala, Mysore, Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Andhra, Christ College (Deemed Uty in Bengaluru) etc. as well as foreign universities like Brooklyn,New York; A & M University Texas, National Singapore University, Singapore, Australian National University, Canberaa (Australia). Also gave PG and research level lectures to PG and research students as well as to College and University Physics teachers under various academic programs like UGC refresher courses, seminars etc. He was also external examiner for the doctoral theses PhD students of many universities.

As part of his experimental research as well as teaching activities, it was necessary to develop or use available mathematical / data analysis tools which necessitate computer programming skills. Prof Varier thus had acquired practical working knowledge in several computer languages such as Fortran, C, Python, Java and more recently Go. He also developed independent computer codes to aid in his research work. He also published a Java code in the international computer journal “Computer Physics Communications”. Computer coding work is being continued ardently by him even now.

After retirement Prof Varier is engaged in learning lessons in Astronomical calculations from his elder brother, Dr. Balakrishna Warrier. He is also developing computer codes for these calculations.

Thereafter he worked for two years as UGC Visiting Professor at the Department of Physics, Kariavattom campus of University of Kerala and as Emeritus Scientist (under a Kerala government funded research schem of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) in the Department of Physics, University College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Prof Varier is currently an active Youtuber. His channel is "Murali's World of Physics". He has so far twentyfive youtube videos to his credit. These explain various physics principles and laws and will be useful to students of Physics.

Prof. Varier has four published scientific books to his credit :

1. Nuclear Radiation Detection, Measurements and Analysis (Narosa Publishing House, New Delhi)

2. A Practical Approach to Nuclear Physics (Narosa Publishing House, New Delhi; also associated with Alpha Science in UK)

3. Advanced Experimental Techniques in Modern Physics - co-authored with Antony Joseph and P P Pardyumnan, his colleagues in the University of Calicut (Pragati Prakasan, Meerut)

4. “റേഡിയോ ആക്ടിവിറ്റിയും അതിന്റെ പ്രായോഗിക ഉപയോഗങ്ങളും” –", published by Kerala State Institute of Languages. This work covers radioactivity and its practical applications, aimed at making nuclear physics concepts accessible in Malayalam for students and general readers in Kerala.

The above books are widely held in Indian institutes such as IITs and central as well as national university libraries as core or recommended reading for PG and research students in nuclear physics (both theory and experimental) and radiation detection as well as many experimental techniques used in nuclear physics related applications

പ്രൊഫ. കെ. മുരളീധര വാര്യർ പ്രശസ്തനായ ഒരു ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും അക്കാദമീഷ്യനും കൂടിയാണ്. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്ര വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം വിരമിച്ചു. 1950 മെയ് 26-ന് കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ മറിയപ്പള്ളിയിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ജ്യോതിഷ പണ്ഡിതനും ജ്യോതിർഗണിത പരമാചാര്യനും തിരുവനന്തപുരം, പെരുന്ന എൻ.എസ്.എസ്. കോളേജുകളിലെ ഗണിതശാസ്ത്ര പ്രൊഫസറുമായിരുന്ന (പരേതനായ) പ്രൊഫ. പി. യു. കൃഷ്ണ വാര്യരും മറിയപ്പള്ളി വടക്കേടത്ത് വാര്യത്തിലെ (പരേതയായ) ശ്രീമതി ലക്ഷ്മിക്കുട്ടി അമ്മയും ആയിരുന്നു മാതാപിതാക്കൾ. പ്രശസ്തനായ കവിയും ജ്യോതിഷനുമായ (പരേതനായ) പണ്ഡനാട്ടിൽ ഗോപാല വാര്യരുടെ ഭാര്യയായ (പരേതയായ) ശ്രീമതി പി. എൽ. ലീലാവതി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മൂത്ത സഹോദരിയായിരുന്നു. പ്രശസ്തനായ ജ്യോതിർഗണിതാചാര്യനും ജ്യോതിഷ്രേഷ്ഠനുമായ (വിരമിച്ച ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്ര പ്രൊഫസർ) ഡോ. കെ. ബാലകൃഷ്ണ വാര്യർ, (വിരമിച്ച) ബി.എസ്.എൻ.എൽ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ജനറൽ മാനേജർ ശ്രീ. കെ. വേണുഗോപാല വാര്യർ, സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ബാങ്കിൽ (വിരമിച്ച) മിഡിൽ മാനേജ്മെന്റ് ഗ്രേഡ് II ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായ ശ്രീ. കെ. ശ്രീകുമാര വാര്യർ, (വിരമിച്ച) എൻ.ടി.പി.സി. അഡീഷണൽ ജനറൽ മാനേജർ ശ്രീ. കെ. ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണ വാര്യർ എന്നിവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരാണ്.

പ്രൊഫ. വാര്യർ ഡോ. പി. ഗിരിജാകുമാരി (ഹോമിയോ ഡോക്ടർ)യെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തു. മറിയപ്പള്ളി വടക്കേടത്ത് വാര്യത്തിലെ (പരേതനായ) ശ്രീ. ഗോപിനാഥ വാര്യരുടെയും പനച്ചിക്കാട് വാര്യത്തിലെ (പരേതയായ) ശ്രീമതി പറുക്കുട്ടി അമ്മയുടെയും മകളാണ് ഗിരിജ. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലാ ക്യാമ്പസിൽ ദീർഘകാലം സ്വകാര്യ ഹോമിയോ ഡോക്ടറായി അവർ സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. അവരുടെ മകൾ അഞ്ജന സീനിയർ ഫയർ ആൻഡ് ലൈഫ് സേഫ്റ്റി എഞ്ചിനീയറായും, മരുമകൻ ഡോ. അനൂപ് ദുബായിലെ Xeluxe Fire Safety എന്ന സ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ പ്രോജക്ട് മാനേജർ (Performance-Based Design Projects) ആയും ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരം കൊഞ്ചിരവില സൗപർണികയിലെ ശ്രീ. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ വാര്യരുടെയും ശ്രീമതി ശ്യാമളയുടെയും മകനാണ് അനൂപ്. ഇവർക്ക് അദ്വൈത്, ആദിത് എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ട് മക്കളുണ്ട്. ഇരുവരും ദുബായിൽ സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം തുടരുന്നു.

അഞ്ജന മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയിലെ തേഞ്ഞിപ്പാലം സെന്റ് പോൾസ് സ്കൂളിലും കാലിക്കറ്റ് എയർപോർട്ട് സ്കൂളിലുമാണ് പഠിച്ചത്. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് (CUIET) ഇലക്ട്രോണിക്സ് ആൻഡ് കമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷൻ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ ബി.ടെക് നേടി. തുടർന്ന് ബെംഗളൂരുവിലെ അമൃത സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ നിന്ന് പവർ ഇലക്ട്രോണിക്സിൽ എം.ടെക് പൂർത്തിയാക്കി.

ഡോ. അനൂപ് കൊച്ചി കുസാറ്റിൽ നിന്ന് ഫയർ ആൻഡ് സേഫ്റ്റിയിൽ ബി.ടെക്, ജെന്റ് സർവകലാശാല (ബെൽജിയം), ലുണ്ടു സർവകലാശാല (സ്വീഡൻ), എഡിൻബറോ സർവകലാശാല (സ്കോട്ട്ലൻഡ്) എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ സംയുക്തമായി നടത്തുന്ന IMFSE പ്രോഗ്രാമിൽ എം.ടെക്, യുകെയിലെ ലാങ്കാഷയർ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് ഫയർ ആൻഡ് സേഫ്റ്റിയിൽ പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. എന്നിവ നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

പ്രൊഫ. വാര്യരുടെ ഇളയ മകൻ ഡോ. ഗോപികൃഷ്ണൻ ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ സിഡ്നിയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന കാനഡ ആസ്ഥാനമായ BTQ Technologies എന്ന കമ്പനിയിൽ Quantum Algorithms and Applications Research വിഭാഗം മേധാവിയായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. മോഹന വാര്യരുടെയും ശുജയുടെയും (കിളിമാനൂർ ശിവസക്തി) മകളായ ശ്രീമതി മീരയാണ് ഭാര്യ. അവർ മക്വയറി സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് എം.എസ് (റിസർച്ച്) പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവർക്ക് നിതാന്ത് എന്ന ഒരു മകനുണ്ട് (ഒന്നാം ക്ലാസ് വിദ്യാർത്ഥി). ഗോപികൃഷ്ണൻ തേഞ്ഞിപ്പാലം സെന്റ് പോൾസ് സ്കൂളിലും കാലിക്കറ്റ് എയർപോർട്ട് സ്കൂളിലുമാണ് പഠിച്ചത്. തിരുവനന്തപുരം IISER-ൽ നിന്ന് BS–MS (Physics) ബിരുദവും, യു.എസ്.എയിലെ ന്യൂ മെക്സിക്കോ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് പി.എച്ച്.ഡി.യും നേടി. ലോസ് ആലാമോസ് ലാബിലും തുടർന്ന് സിഡ്നിയിലെ മക്വയറി സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്ര വിഭാഗത്തിലും പോസ്റ്റ് ഡോക്ടറൽ റിസർച്ച് ഫെല്ലോ ആയി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. മീര കിളിമാനൂരിൽ സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും, നിലമേൽ എൻ.എസ്.എസ്. കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ബി.എസ്.സി (Physics), ചങ്ങനാശേരി എസ്.ബി. കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് എം.എസ്.സി (Physics), തുടർന്ന് ന്യൂ മെക്സിക്കോ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് എം.എസ് ബിരുദവും നേടി.

പ്രൊഫ. വാര്യർ പെരുന്ന എൻ.എസ്.എസ്. കോളേജിൽ സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടി. കേരള സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് ബി.എസ്.സി, എം.എസ്.സി (Physics) ബിരുദങ്ങളും മുംബൈ ഐ.ഐ.ടി.യിൽ നിന്ന് പി.എച്ച്.ഡി.യും നേടി. തുടർന്ന് ഐ.ഐ.ടി. കാൻപൂരിൽ പോസ്റ്റ് ഡോക്ടറൽ ഗവേഷണം നടത്തി. 1980-ൽ കാലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്ര വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ലക്ചററായി ചേർന്നു. 1988-ൽ റീഡറായും 1996-ൽ പ്രൊഫസറായും ഉയർന്നു. 2010-ൽ വകുപ്പ് മേധാവിയായി വിരമിച്ചു. 30 വർഷത്തെ മികച്ച സേവനകാലത്ത് പി.ജി. ബോർഡ് ഓഫ് സ്റ്റഡീസ് അംഗം, ചെയർമാൻ, ഡീൻ ഓഫ് ഫാക്കൽറ്റി ഓഫ് സയൻസസ്, IQAC അംഗം, വിവിധ ഇൻസ്പെക്ഷൻ കമ്മിറ്റികളുടെ അംഗം, പരാമെഡിക്കൽ കോഴ്‌സുകളുടെ ഡയറക്ടർ തുടങ്ങിയ നിലകളിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.

ഗവേഷണ രംഗത്ത് IIT മുംബൈ, കാൻപൂർ, TIFR, BARC, SINP, VECC, IOP ഭുവനേശ്വർ, IGCAR കൽപ്പാക്കം തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുമായി സഹകരിച്ചു. മൂന്നു വർഷത്തെ UGC നാഷണൽ റിസർച്ച് അസോസിയേറ്റ്ഷിപ്പ് ലഭിച്ചു. IUAC, ന്യൂഡൽഹിയുമായി ദീർഘകാല സഹകരണവും അവിടത്തെ Accelerator User Committee, Board of Governors അംഗത്വവും വഹിച്ചു.

എം.എസ്.സി, എം.ഫിൽ, പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. ഗവേഷണങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം നയിച്ചു. 12 പേർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാർഗനിർദേശത്തിൽ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് നേടി. 60-ൽ അധികം ഗവേഷണ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ ദേശീയ, അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ജേർണലുകളിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. ഇറ്റലിയിലെ ലെന്യാരോ നാഷണൽ ലാബിൽ INFN ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പോടെ പോസ്റ്റ് ഡോക്ടറൽ ഗവേഷണവും നടത്തി. ടെക്സാസ് (1984), ക്രൊയേഷ്യ (1991), ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ (1997) എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സമ്മേളനങ്ങളിൽ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

ഇന്ത്യയിലെയും വിദേശത്തെയും നിരവധി സർവകലാശാലകളും ഗവേഷണ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും സന്ദർശിച്ചു. യു.ജി.സി. റിഫ്രഷർ കോഴ്സുകൾ, സെമിനാറുകൾ എന്നിവയിൽ പി.ജി.യും ഗവേഷണതലവുമായ പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തി. പല സർവകലാശാലകളിലെയും പി.എച്ച്.ഡി. പരീക്ഷകളുടെ എക്സ്റ്റേണൽ എക്സാമിനറായും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.

ഗണിത–ഡാറ്റാ വിശകലന ആവശ്യങ്ങൾക്കായി Fortran, C, Python, Java, Go തുടങ്ങിയ ഭാഷകളിൽ പ്രായോഗിക പ്രോഗ്രാമിംഗ് പരിചയം നേടി. “Computer Physics Communications” എന്ന അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ജേർണലിൽ ജാവ കോഡ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ രംഗത്തെ പ്രവർത്തനം ഇന്നും തുടരുന്നു.

വിരമിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം സഹോദരൻ ഡോ. ബാലകൃഷ്ണ വാര്യരിൽ നിന്ന് ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്ര കണക്കുകൂട്ടലുകൾ പഠിക്കുകയും അതിനായി കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ കോഡുകൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കേരള സർവകലാശാലയിലെ കാരിയവട്ടം ക്യാമ്പസിൽ യു.ജി.സി. വിസിറ്റിംഗ് പ്രൊഫസറായും, തിരുവനന്തപുരം യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിൽ KSCSTE പദ്ധതിയിലുളള എമിറിറ്റസ് സയന്റിസ്റ്റായും സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.

ഇപ്പോൾ പ്രൊഫ. വാര്യർ സജീവമായ ഒരു യൂട്യൂബറാണ്. “Murali's World of Physics” എന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചാനലിൽ 25-ഓളം വീഡിയോകൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് ഏറെ ഉപകാരപ്രദമാണ്.

ഈ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ ഐ.ഐ.ടി.കൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ഇന്ത്യൻ സർവകലാശാലകളിൽ പി.ജി.യും ഗവേഷണതലവുമായ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് പ്രധാന റഫറൻസ് ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
