മാധ്യമ രംഗത്ത് വ്യക്തിമുദ്ര പതിപ്പിച്ച മാങ്കുളങ്ങര കെ ദേവീദാസ വാര്യർ എന്ന എം കെ ഡി, പ്രക്ഷേപണ വാർത്തകളുടെ മേഖലയിലും സാമൂഹിക പ്രസക്തിയുള്ള വിഷയങ്ങളെ ഉയർത്തിക്കാട്ടുന്ന പ്രചാരണ മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തനത്തിലും വിലപ്പെട്ട സംഭാവനകൾ ചെയ്ത പ്രതിഭയാണ്.

1933 മാർച്ച് ഏഴാം തീയതിയാണ് കോട്ടക്കലിൽ എം കേ ഡി ഭൂജാതനായത്. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ മഹാരാജാവിൻറ്റെ സ്വകാര്യ അദ്ധ്യാപകനെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തി നേടിയ കെ എസ് കൃഷ്ണ വാര്യരായിരുന്നു അഛൻ; ഭാരതീ വാരസ്യാരായിരുന്നു അമ്മ. കവി കുലഗുരു എന്ന് പ്രശസ്തനായ കവിയും സംസ്കൃതപണ്ഡിതനുമായ പി വി കൃഷ്ണ വാര്യരായിരുന്നു എം കെ ഡിയുടെ മുത്തശ്ശൻ.

സ്ക്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ സാൽവേഷൻ ആർമി സ്ക്കൂൾ, പ്രശസ്തമായ മോഡൽ സ്ക്കൂൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ മികവോടെ പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ എം കെ ഡി 13ാം വയസ്സിൽ തന്നെ പ്രവേശന പരീക്ഷയെഴുതി യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിൽ ചേർന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ നേട്ടമായിരുന്നു. ഭാരതം സ്വതന്ത്രമായതിൻറ്റെ തൊട്ടടുത്ത വർഷം ടൈപ്പ് റൈറ്റിങ്, ചുരുക്കെഴുത്ത് പരീക്ഷകളിൽ സ്വർണ്ണ മെഡൽ കരസ്ഥമാക്കാനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സാധിച്ചു. മനശ്ശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ബിരുദവും രാഷ്ട്രമീമാംസയിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ എം കെ ഡി, ഫ്രെഞ്ച്, റഷ്യൻ ഭാഷകളിലും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രീതിശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ഡിപ്ലോമകളും അനായാസം കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയിരുന്നു.

1951ൽ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ അക്കൌണ്ടൻറ്റ് ജനറൽ ഓഫീസിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചത്.കുറച്ചു കാലം മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ജോലി തേടി ബോംബേയ്ക്കു പോയ എം കെ ഡി ഒരു സ്വകാര്യ കയറ്റുമതി സ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. 1956ലാണ് സ്വന്തം പ്രതിഭയ്ക്ക് അനുയോജ്യമായ മാധ്യമ രംഗത്തേക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം കാലെടുത്തു വയ്ക്കുന്നത്. ആ വർഷം കേന്ദ്ര വാർത്താ വിതരണ പ്രക്ഷേപണ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിലെ സെൻട്രൽ ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ സർവ്വീസിൽ (ഇപ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ സർവ്വിസ്) അദ്ദേഹം ചേർന്നു.

ഇതിനിടെ 1952ൽ എം കെ ഡി, ബാല്യകാല ആത്മസഖിയായ മാലതി വാര്യരെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ലത, പ്രേം, ദുർഗ്ഗ, മിനി എന്നിങ്ങനെ നാലു മക്കളാണ് ഈ ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് ഉള്ളത്.

ഡൽഹി ആകാശവാണി വാർത്താ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ദീർഘകാലം ജോലി ചെയ്ത അദ്ദേഹം നിരവധി ചരിത്ര സംഭവങ്ങൾക്ക് സാക്ഷിയാവുകയും അവ ആകാശവാണിയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി ചടുലവും സമ്പന്നവുമായ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രക്ഷേപണ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിൻറ്റെ മർമ്മപ്രധാനമെന്ന് തന്നെ പറയാവുന്ന മോണിട്ടറിങ് സർവ്വീസിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള എം കെ ഡിയ്ക്ക് 1963ൽ ചൈനയുമായും 1965ൽ പാക്കിസ്ഥാനുമായി നടന്ന യുദ്ധങ്ങളുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ അർത്ഥപൂർണ്ണമായ പങ്കാണ് വഹിക്കാനായത്.

ഇതിനിടെ 1963ൽ അഛൻ അന്തരിച്ചതിനെ തുടർന്ന് എം കെ ഡി തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തേക്ക് പ്രവർത്തനരംഗം മാറ്റി. ഐ എസ് ആർ ഓയുടെ പ്രാരംഭ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, കേരള രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലെ ഉദ്വേഗജനകമായ സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങൾ, ദേശീയ അന്തർദേശീയ തലങ്ങളിലുള്ള നിരവധി നേതാക്കളുടെ കേരള സന്ദർശനങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി മേഖലകളെ കുറിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തു നിന്നും അയച്ച വാർത്തകൾ ദേശീയ തലത്തിലും ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റിയിരുന്നു.

ഗവൺമെൻറ്റിൻറ്റെ ക്ഷേമ വികസന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളേയും നയ പരിപാടികളെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ നേരിട്ട് ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ എത്തിക്കുന്ന ഫീൽഡ് പബ്ളിസിറ്റി വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ജോലി എം കേ ഡിയ്ക്ക് ഏറെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതായിരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ ഫീൽഡ് പബ്ളിസിറ്റി വിഭാഗത്തിൻറ്റെ ജോയിൻറ്റ് ഡയറക്ടർ എന്ന നിലയിൽ സാക്ഷരതാ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണ മേഖല, എച് ഐ വിയ്ക്കെതിരായ ബോധവൽക്കരണം, വനിതാ ശാക്തീകരണം തുടങ്ങിയ രംഗങ്ങളിൽ സംയോജിതമായ പ്രചാരണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഫലപ്രദമായി ഏകോപിപ്പിക്കാൻ എം കെ ഡിക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറ്റെ ആശയവിനിമയ രംഗത്തെ പ്രവർത്തന മികവിനും വ്യക്തിപരമായ സമീപനസൌഹൃദത്തിനും മികച്ച തെളിവാണ്.

"അപരിചിതർ എന്നൊരു സങ്കൽപ്പനമേ ഇല്ല; കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ മാത്രമേയുള്ളു" എന്നതായിരുന്നു എം കെ ഡിയ്ക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ട്ടപ്പെട്ട ഉദ്ധരിണി. ഇത് പ്രവർത്തി പഥത്തിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടു വരുന്നതിനുള്ള അക്ഷീണവും അർത്ഥസമ്പൂർണ്ണവുമായ സ്ഥിരം പ്രവർത്തനമായിരുന്നു ആ ജീവിതം. ഔദ്യോഗിക തലത്തിലും വ്യക്തി പരമായും അദ്ദേഹം പലരേയും - ഈയെഴുതുന്ന എന്നേയുൾപ്പെടെ - അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ രീതികളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രസ് ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ ബ്യൂറോയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറ്റെ സഹായിയായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ച തിരക്കേറിയ നാളുകൾ എനിയ്ക്ക് അവിസ്മരണീയം തന്നെ. പ്രശസ്തരും അപ്രശസ്തരുമായുള്ള പലരേയും കണ്ട് അഭിമുഖങ്ങൾ നടത്താനും അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ തന്നെ സമൂഹമദ്ധ്യത്തിലിറങ്ങി വിവരശേഖരണം നടത്താനും അദ്ദേഹം നൽകിയ പ്രായോഗിക നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും ഉപദേശിച്ച സൂത്രവിദ്യകളും വിലമതിക്കാനാകാത്തവ തന്നെ.

ഔദ്യോഗിക പദവിയിൽ നിന്നും പിരിഞ്ഞ ശേഷവും സാമൂഹ്യമായി പ്രസക്തമായ പല പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിലും അദ്ദേഹം സജീവമായിരുന്നു. മാധ്യമ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം എടുത്തിരുന്ന ക്ലാസ്സുകൾ പ്രായോഗികവും പ്രോത്സാഹ ജനകവുമായിരുന്നു. 2018ൽ 85ാം വയസ്സിൽ തൃശ്ശൂരിൽ നിര്യാതനാകും വരെ കർത്തവ്യ നിരതനായിരുന്ന എം കെ ദേവിദാസ് വാര്യർ മൂല്യങ്ങൾ കൈവിടാതെയുള്ള, സാർത്ഥകമായ മാധ്യമ ജീവിതത്തിൻറ്റെ തിളക്കമാർന്ന ഉദാഹരണമാണ്.

A Value-Centred and Meaningful Life: M. K. Devidas Warrier

Mankulangara K. Devidas Warrier, popularly known as M. K. D., was a distinguished personality who left a unique imprint in the field of media. He made valuable contributions both to broadcast journalism and to public communication that highlighted socially relevant issues.

M. K. D. was born on 7 March 1933 in Kottakkal. His father was K. S. Krishna Warrier, a highly respected scholar who served as the private tutor to the Maharaja of Travancore at the Travancore Palace. His mother was Bharathi Warasyar. M. K. D.’s grandfather was P. V. Krishna Warrier, the renowned poet and Sanskrit scholar widely known as Kavi Kulaguru.

He completed his schooling with distinction at the Salvation Army School and the prestigious Model School in Thiruvananthapuram. A remarkable achievement in his early life was that he appeared for the entrance examination and joined University College at the age of just thirteen. In the year immediately following India’s independence, he also won gold medals in typewriting and shorthand examinations.

M. K. D. obtained a degree in Psychology and a postgraduate degree in Political Science. In addition, he earned diplomas in French, Russian, and Educational Methodology, demonstrating his wide intellectual interests and academic ability.

He began his official career in 1951 at the Accountant General’s Office in Thiruvananthapuram. Later, seeking better opportunities, he moved to Bombay and worked for a private export company for some time. In 1956, he entered the field that truly suited his talents—the media and communication sector—by joining the Central Information Service of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (now the Indian Information Service).

Earlier, in 1952, M. K. D. had married his childhood companion Malathi Warrier. The couple had four children: Latha, Prem, Durga, and Mini.

He worked for a long period in the News Division of All India Radio in Delhi, where he witnessed several historic events and reported them for AIR in lively and rich English. His role in the Monitoring Service of the Ministry of Broadcasting, one of its most critical divisions, was particularly significant. During the 1963 conflict with China and the 1965 war with Pakistan, he played a meaningful role in monitoring and reporting information.

After his father’s death in 1963, M. K. D. shifted his base of work to Thiruvananthapuram. From there, he reported on many important developments such as the early activities of ISRO, dramatic political developments in Kerala, and visits by several national and international leaders to the state. His reports from Thiruvananthapuram received attention at the national level.

Among his various responsibilities, he especially loved his work in the Field Publicity Division, which aimed to take information about government welfare programmes and development initiatives directly to the villages. As Joint Director of the Field Publicity Division in Kerala, he successfully coordinated integrated campaigns on literacy, environmental protection, HIV awareness, and women’s empowerment. His effectiveness in communication and his warm personal approach were key factors behind the success of these initiatives.

One of his favourite quotations was:

“There is no such thing as strangers; there are only friends waiting to be discovered.”

His life itself was a tireless and meaningful effort to put this thought into practice. Both professionally and personally, he influenced many people—often in unexpected ways—including the author of this note. The busy days I spent working as his assistant in the Press Information Bureau remain unforgettable. The practical guidance and journalistic techniques he shared—encouraging us to meet both famous and ordinary people, conduct interviews, and gather information directly from society—were truly invaluable.
