Krishnan Unni -Kedavilakkukal in WARRIERS

Krishnan Unni (born 12 June 1950) is a distinguished sound engineer, filmmaker, and author with a career spanning over four decades in Indian cinema, particularly in Malayalam films.

He was born at Tharakkal Variyam, Vallapuzha, Palakkad district, Kerala. He completed his schooling at NSS KPT High School, Ottapalam. His father, Krishnankutty Varier of Thumpaya Variem, was the proprietor of Malabar Swadesi Emporium, a highly regarded textile and stationery establishment in Ottapalam during its time. His mother, Sridevi Kavu Varassiar, hailed from Tharakkal Variyam and was a homemaker.

He has two siblings. His sister, Rema (Rema Unnikrishnan), is an active member of the Warrier Samajam Vanithavedi. She is married to M. Unnikrishnan Warrier, who served as the President of the Warrier Samajam for several years; he passed away in 2025. His brother, Dr. Govindan Unni, is a very well-known cardiologist and currently serves as emeritus Professor and Director of Hridayalaya at Jubilee Mission Medical College Hospital, Thrissur.

Krishnan Unni pursued his graduation in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Kozhikode, and later specialized in Sound Recording at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. After graduating from FTII, he joined the Space Applications Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad, where he worked as a sound engineer in the television studio.

In 1980, following the establishment of Chithranjali Studio, Kerala’s first government-owned film studio, he joined its Sound Department. He served at Chithranjali Studio for twenty-eight years, retiring in June 2008 as Chief Sound Engineer. Since retirement, he has continued to work independently as a freelancer in sound design, sound mixing, subtitling, and short film making.

During his career, he received the President of India’s Award for Best Audiography three times—for

Anantharam (Dir. Adoor Gopalakrishnan),

Piravi (Dir. Shaji N. Karun), and

Desadanam (Dir. Jayaraj).

He has also received nine Kerala State Film Awards for Audiography, the most recent being for Oru Pennum Randanum (Dir. Adoor Gopalakrishnan) in 2008.

In 2005, he was awarded the President’s Award for Best Director for the biographical documentary Vaidya Ratnam P. S. Varier, produced by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation for the Information and Public Relations Department, Government of Kerala.

He has directed several documentaries for the Information and Public Relations Department, Archaeology Department, Government of Kerala, as well as a series of documentaries for Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, Malappuram. His recent directorial work includes a short promotional film for KSOTTO (Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) on organ transplantation.

As a sound designer, his notable works include films by Shaji N. Karun (Kutty Srank, Swapanam, Olu), Sanalkumar Sasidharan (Ozhivudivasathe Kali, Sexy Durga), T. V. Chandran (Bhoomiyude Avakashikal), Harikumar (Jwalamukhi), K. P. Kumaran (Gramavrikshathile Kuyil), Sunny Joseph (Bhoomiyude Uppu), and the Tamil film Ankammaal directed by Vipin Radhakrishnan.

He has been actively engaged in English subtitling for Malayalam cinema since 2007.

Krishnanunni is also an accomplished author. His published works include Sound in Moving Pictures (Mathrubhumi Publications, 2010), Anganeyum Oru Cinemakkalam (Current Books, 2024), and Sabdendrajalam, a Malayalam book on the soundtracks of selected Malayalam films, published by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in December 2025.

He married Nirmalakumari of Hariharamangalam Variyam, Ponnani, in June 1981. They have two sons. Sridhar is a Senior Manager at Cognizant Technologies, New Jersey, USA, married to Rajani Warrier, with two children, Ananya and Dhruv. Sunand is Vice President at Morgan Stanley, Bengaluru, married to Saumya, and they have two children, Sithara and Siddharth.

കൃഷ്ണൻ ഉണ്ണി (ജനനം: 12 ജൂൺ 1950) ഇന്ത്യൻ സിനിമയിൽ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മലയാള സിനിമയിൽ, നാല് ദശാബ്ദത്തിലേറെയായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്ന പ്രമുഖ സൗണ്ട് എൻജിനീയറും ചലച്ചിത്രകാരനും എഴുത്തുകാരനുമാണ്.

അദ്ദേഹം കേരളത്തിലെ പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ വല്ലപ്പുഴയിലെ തരയ്ക്കൽ വാരിയത്തിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ഒറ്റപ്പാലം എൻ.എസ്.എസ്. കെ.പി.ടി. ഹൈസ്കൂളിലായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം. തുമ്പായ വാരിയത്തിലെ കൃഷ്ണൻകുട്ടി വാരിയർ ആയിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവ്. ഒറ്റപ്പാലത്തിൽ ഒരു കാലത്ത് ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമായ വസ്ത്ര–സ്റ്റേഷനറി സ്ഥാപനമായ മലബാർ സ്വദേശി എമ്പോറിയത്തിന്റെ ഉടമയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. മാതാവ് ശ്രീദേവി കാവ് വരശ്ശിയാർ, തരയ്ക്കൽ വാരിയത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ളവളും ഒരു ഗൃഹിണിയുമായിരുന്നു.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് രണ്ട് സഹോദരങ്ങളുണ്ട്. സഹോദരി രേമ (രേമ ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണൻ) വാര്യർ സമാജം വനിതാവേദിയുടെ സജീവ അംഗമാണ്. അവർ വാര്യർ സമാജത്തിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റായി നിരവധി വർഷങ്ങൾ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച എം. ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണൻ വാരിയറെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു; അദ്ദേഹം 2025-ൽ അന്തരിച്ചു. സഹോദരൻ ഡോ. ഗോവിന്ദൻ ഉണ്ണി പ്രശസ്തനായ ഹൃദ്രോഗ വിദഗ്ധനാണ്. നിലവിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തൃശ്ശൂരിലെ ജൂബിലി മിഷൻ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജ് ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഹൃദയാലയത്തിന്റെ എമിറിറ്റസ് പ്രൊഫസറും ഡയറക്ടറുമായാണ് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്.

കൃഷ്ണൻ ഉണ്ണി കോഴിക്കോട് ദേവഗിരിയിലെ സെന്റ് ജോസഫ്‌സ് കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ഫിസിക്സിൽ ബിരുദം നേടി. തുടർന്ന് പുണെയിലെ ഫിലിം ആൻഡ് ടെലിവിഷൻ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ (FTII)യിൽ സൗണ്ട് റെക്കോർഡിംഗിൽ പ്രത്യേക പരിശീലനം നേടി. FTIIയിൽ നിന്ന് പഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ശേഷം അഹമ്മദാബാദിലെ സ്‌പേസ് ആപ്ലിക്കേഷൻസ് സെന്ററിൽ (ISRO) ടെലിവിഷൻ സ്റ്റുഡിയോയിലെ സൗണ്ട് എൻജിനീയറായി അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.

1980-ൽ കേരളത്തിലെ ആദ്യ സർക്കാർ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള ചലച്ചിത്ര സ്റ്റുഡിയോയായ ചിത്രാഞ്ജലി സ്റ്റുഡിയോ സ്ഥാപിതമായതിനെ തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം അവിടുത്തെ സൗണ്ട് വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ചേർന്നു. 28 വർഷം ചിത്രാഞ്ജലി സ്റ്റുഡിയോയിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം 2008 ജൂണിൽ ചീഫ് സൗണ്ട് എൻജിനീയറായി വിരമിച്ചു. വിരമിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം സൗണ്ട് ഡിസൈൻ, സൗണ്ട് മിക്സിംഗ്, സബ്‌ടൈറ്റിലിംഗ്, ഹ്രസ്വചിത്ര നിർമ്മാണം തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിൽ സ്വതന്ത്രമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നു.

തന്റെ കരിയറിനിടെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രപതി നൽകുന്ന മികച്ച ഓഡിയോ ഗ്രാഫിക്കുള്ള പുരസ്കാരം അദ്ദേഹം മൂന്നു തവണ നേടി—

പിറവി (സംവിധാനം: ഷാജി എൻ. കരുണ്‍),

കൂടാതെ ഒമ്പത് തവണ കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര പുരസ്കാരം (ഓഡിയോ ഗ്രാഫി) അദ്ദേഹം നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2008-ൽ അടൂർ ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണൻ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ഒരു പെണ്ണും രണ്ടാണും എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിനായിരുന്നു അവസാനത്തെ പുരസ്കാരം.

2005-ൽ, കേരള സർക്കാരിന്റെ വിവര-ജനസമ്പർക്ക വകുപ്പിനായി കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര വികസന കോർപ്പറേഷൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച വൈദ്യരത്നം പി. എസ്. വാരിയർ എന്ന ജീവചരിത്ര ഡോക്യുമെന്ററിക്ക് മികച്ച സംവിധായകനുള്ള രാഷ്ട്രപതി പുരസ്കാരം അദ്ദേഹം നേടി.

വിവര-ജനസമ്പർക്ക വകുപ്പ്, പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പ് (കേരള സർക്കാർ) എന്നിവയ്ക്കായി നിരവധി ഡോക്യുമെന്ററികൾ അദ്ദേഹം സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. മലപ്പുറം കോട്ടക്കൽ ആര്യവൈദ്യശാലയ്ക്കായി ഒരു ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി പരമ്പരയും അദ്ദേഹം സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തു. അവയവ ദാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് കെഎസ്ഒടിടിഒ (കേരള സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഓർഗൻ ആൻഡ് ടിഷ്യൂ ട്രാൻസ്‌പ്ലാന്റ് ഓർഗനൈസേഷൻ)ക്കായി ഒരുക്കിയ ഹ്രസ്വ പ്രചാരണ ചിത്രമാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സമീപകാല സംവിധാന പ്രവർത്തനം.

സൗണ്ട് ഡിസൈനറായി ഷാജി എൻ. കരുണ്‍ (കുട്ടി സ്രാങ്ക്, സ്വപ്നം, ഓളു), സനൽകുമാർ ശശിധരൻ (ഒഴിവുദിവസത്തെ കളി, സെക്സി ദുർഗ), ടി. വി. ചന്ദ്രൻ (ഭൂമിയുടെ അവകാശികൾ), ഹരികുമാർ (ജ്വാലാമുഖി), കെ. പി. കുമാരൻ (ഗ്രാമവൃക്ഷത്തിലെ കുയിൽ), സണ്ണി ജോസഫ് (ഭൂമിയുടെ ഉപ്പ്) എന്നിവരുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലും, വിപിൻ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത തമിഴ് ചിത്രം അങ്കമ്മാൾലും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

2007 മുതൽ മലയാള സിനിമകളുടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സബ്‌ടൈറ്റിലിംഗിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സജീവമായി ഏർപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്നു.

ഒരു പ്രഗത്ഭനായ എഴുത്തുകാരനുമാണ് കൃഷ്ണൻ ഉണ്ണി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച കൃതികളിൽ Sound in Moving Pictures (മാതൃഭൂമി ബുക്സ്, 2010), അങ്ങനെയും ഒരു സിനിമക്കാലം (കറന്റ് ബുക്സ്, 2024), കൂടാതെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത മലയാള സിനിമകളുടെ സൗണ്ട് ട്രാക്കുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ശബ്ദേന്ദ്രജാലം എന്ന പുസ്തകം (കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അക്കാദമി, ഡിസംബർ 2025) എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.

1981 ജൂണിൽ പൊന്നാനി ഹരിഹരമംഗലം വാരിയത്തിലെ നിർമലകുമാരിയെ അദ്ദേഹം വിവാഹം ചെയ്തു. ഇവർക്ക് രണ്ട് പുത്രന്മാരുണ്ട്. മൂത്ത മകൻ ശ്രീധർ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ന്യൂജേഴ്സിയിലെ കോഗ്നിസന്റ് ടെക്നോളജീസിൽ സീനിയർ മാനേജറാണ്. രാജനി വാരിയറാണ് ഭാര്യ; അനന്യയും ധ്രുവും മക്കളാണ്. ഇളയ മകൻ സുനന്ദ് ബെംഗളൂരുവിലെ മോർഗൻ സ്റ്റാൻലിയിലെ വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റാണ്. സൗമ്യയാണ് ഭാര്യ; സിതാരയും സിദ്ധാർത്ഥും മക്കളാണ്.
