അഡ്വാൻസ്ഡ് മെറ്റീരിയൽസ് സയൻസ്, പ്രതിരോധ സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യകൾ, ദേശീയ സുരക്ഷാ ഗവേഷണം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിൽ നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ടോളം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന മികച്ച ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതം കാഴ്ചവെച്ച പ്രഗത്ഭനായ ഒരു ഇന്ത്യൻ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും മെറ്റലർജിസ്റ്റും ഗവേഷകനുമാണ് ഡോ. കുട്ടനെല്ലൂർ മുരളീധരൻ. ഫിസിക്കൽ മെറ്റലർജി, ഇലക്ട്രോൺ മൈക്രോസ്കോപ്പി, സോളിഡ്-സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഫേസ് ട്രാൻസ്ഫോർമേഷൻസ് എന്നിവയിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രധാനമായും വൈദഗ്ധ്യമുള്ളത്.
1960 ഒക്ടോബർ 15-ന് കേരളത്തിലെ തൃശൂരിൽ, കുട്ടനെല്ലൂർ കിഴക്കേപ്പാട്ട് വാരിയത്താണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. വേലൂർ കിഴക്കേ വാരിയത്ത് ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണ വാരിയരും കുട്ടനെല്ലൂർ കിഴക്കേപ്പാട്ട് വാരിയത്ത് വിലാസിനി വാരസ്യാരുമാണ് മാതാപിതാക്കൾ.
വാരണാസിയിലെ ബനാറസ് ഹിന്ദു സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്നോളജിയിൽ (IT-BHU) നിന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ബി.ടെക് (1983), പിഎച്ച്.ഡി (1994) ബിരുദങ്ങൾ കരസ്ഥമാക്കി.
ഹൈദരാബാദിലെ മിശ്ര ധാതു നിഗമിൽ (MIDHANI) ഗ്രാജ്വേറ്റ് എഞ്ചിനീയർ ട്രെയിനിയായി കുറച്ചുകാലം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച ശേഷം, 1984-ൽ ഹൈദരാബാദിലെ ഡിഫൻസ് മെറ്റലർജിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച് ലബോറട്ടറിയിൽ (DMRL) ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായാണ് അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചത്.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മികച്ച നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് ഡി.എം.ആർ.എല്ലിലെ (DMRL) ഇലക്ട്രോൺ മൈക്രോസ്കോപ്പി സൗകര്യം അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര നിലവാരത്തിലേക്ക് ഉയർന്നത്. തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം അവിടുത്തെ ഇലക്ട്രോൺ മൈക്രോസ്കോപ്പി, മെറ്റീരിയൽസ് മാനേജ്മെന്റ് വിഭാഗങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. 1995–1997 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ യു.എസ്.എ-യിലെ പിറ്റ്സ്ബർഗിലുള്ള കാർനെഗി മെലോൺ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ റിസർച്ച് അസോസിയേറ്റായും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.
ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പ്രതിരോധ, ബഹിരാകാശ അടിസ്ഥാന സൗകര്യങ്ങളെ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നിർണ്ണായക പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യൻ നാവികസേനയ്ക്കായി പ്രത്യേകതരം സ്റ്റീൽ (DMR-249A, DMR-249B) വിജയകരമായി വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്ത പ്രതിരോധ ഗവേഷണ സംഘത്തിന്റെ തലവനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങളെ ആശ്രയിക്കാതെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ തദ്ദേശീയ വിമാനവാഹിനിക്കപ്പലായ ഐ.എൻ.എസ് വിക്രാന്ത് ഈ സ്റ്റീൽ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിലെ DRDO ആസ്ഥാനത്ത് 'ഡയറക്ടർ ഓഫ് മെറ്റീരിയൽസ്' ആയി സ്ഥാനക്കയറ്റം ലഭിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം, നാനോ സയൻസ്, സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ, NBC (ന്യൂക്ലിയർ, ബയോളജിക്കൽ, കെമിക്കൽ) പ്രതിരോധ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഏകോപിപ്പിച്ചു.
കവച നിർമ്മാണത്തിനുള്ള വസ്തുക്കൾ, ഹൈപ്പർസോണിക് വാഹനങ്ങൾ, ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് & ഫങ്ഷണൽ ആപ്ലിക്കേഷനുകൾ, സ്റ്റെൽത്ത് സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യകൾ എന്നിവയ്ക്കായുള്ള ഭാവി സാങ്കേതിക റോഡ്മാപ്പുകൾ തയ്യാറാക്കുന്നതിൽ പ്രധാന പങ്ക് വഹിച്ച DRDO-യുടെ ആഭ്യന്തര തിങ്ക് ടാങ്കായ G-FAST-ലെ സുപ്രധാന അംഗമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. ഇലക്ട്രോൺ മൈക്രോസ്കോപ്പി സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റായും അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
പ്രതിരോധ ഉൽപ്പാദനരംഗത്ത് സ്വയംപര്യാപ്തത കൈവരിക്കുന്നതിലെ മികവിന് DRDO-യുടെ 'അഗ്നി അവാർഡ്' ഉൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി ബഹുമതികൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
2015 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 5-ന് കൊൽക്കത്തയിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ സി.എസ്.ഐ.ആർ-സെൻട്രൽ ഗ്ലാസ് ആൻഡ് സെറാമിക് റിസർച്ച് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിന്റെ (CSIR-CGCRI) എട്ടാമത്തെ ഡയറക്ടറായി ചുമതലയേറ്റ അദ്ദേഹം, 2020 ഒക്ടോബർ 31-ന് വിരമിക്കുന്നതുവരെ ആ പദവിയിൽ തുടർന്നു.
വിരമിച്ച ശേഷം തൃശൂരിലെ സി-മെറ്റ് (C-MET) എന്ന സ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ സി.എസ്.ഐ.ആർ എമിറേറ്റ് സയന്റിസ്റ്റായി അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം വിവിധ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിൽ കൺസൾട്ടന്റായും ഉപദേശകനായും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ശ്രീമതി ലക്ഷ്മി ഇടയ്ക്കുന്നിയാണ് ഭാര്യ. പ്രശസ്ത കാരിക്കേച്ചറിസ്റ്റ് ജയരാജ് വാരിയർ, വിജി എന്നിവർ സഹോദരങ്ങളാണ്. സമസ്ത കേരള വാരിയർ സമാജം തൃശൂർ യൂണിറ്റ് എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് കമ്മിറ്റി മെമ്പറായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ഇപ്പോൾ വട്ടപ്പിനിയിൽ പനമുക്ക് വാരിയത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്നു.

Dr. Kuttanellur Muralidharan is a renowned Indian scientist, metallurgist, and researcher with nearly four decades of exemplary service in advanced materials science, defense technologies, and national security research. His primary expertise lies in physical metallurgy, electron microscopy, and solid-state phase transformations.
Born on October 15, 1960, at Kuttanellur Kizhakkepaattu Variyam in Thrissur, Kerala, his parents are Velur Kizhakkepaattu Variyam Unnikrishna Warrier and Kuttanellur Kizhakkepaattu Variyam Vilasini Varasyar. He earned his B.Tech (1983) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from the Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi.
After a short tenure as a Graduate Engineer Trainee at Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI) in Hyderabad, he officially began his scientific career in 1984 by joining the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad. Under his leadership, the electron microscopy facility at DMRL was upgraded to international standards. He later headed its Electron Microscopy and Materials Management divisions. Between 1995 and 1997, he also worked as a Research Associate at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA.
His contributions have significantly enhanced India's defense and space infrastructure. He headed the defense research team that successfully developed special-grade steel (DMR-249A, DMR-249B) for the Indian Navy. This achievement helped India avoid relying on foreign steel for building warships; notably, India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, was built using this steel. Later, he was promoted to 'Director of Materials' at the DRDO Headquarters in New Delhi, coordinating activities in nanoscience, technology, and NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) defense.
Dr. Muralidharan was a key member of DRDO's internal think tank, G-FAST, making vital contributions to forecasting and creating national technology roadmaps for armor materials, hypersonic vehicles, electronic and functional applications, and stealth technologies. He has also served as the President of the Electron Microscope Society of India. For his outstanding contributions to achieving self-reliance in defense production, he has received several accolades, including DRDO's 'Agni Award'.
On August 5, 2015, he took over as the eighth Director of the CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI) in Kolkata, serving there until his superannuation on October 31, 2020. Following his retirement, he served as a CSIR Emeritus Scientist at C-MET in Thrissur. Currently, he works as a consultant and advisor for various organizations.
On a personal front, his wife is Smt. Lakshmi Edaykkunni. His siblings include the renowned caricaturist Jayaraj Warrier and Viji. He is currently an Executive Committee member of the Samastha Kerala Warrier Samajam, Thrissur unit, and resides at Panamukku Variyam in Vattappini.
