Dr Kannan C. S. Warrier, Director of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCSTE-KFRI), has been honoured with the International Iconic Scientist Award by Scientific Laurels, a research recognition and academic support platform registered under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to forestry science, forest genetics, tree improvement, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management.KFRI Director recognised for three decades of outstanding contributions to forest genetics, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forestry
With over three decades of research experience, beginning at the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, Dr Warrier has made significant contributions to clonal forestry and the improvement of forest genetic resources. His development of three high-yielding, salt-tolerant clones of Casuarina equisetifolia has enabled the productive use of degraded sodic soils, creating opportunities for farm forestry, strengthening the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, and providing sustainable wood resources for pulp, paper, and other industries. The development of salt tolerant Casuarina clones was also among the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) 's key institutional findings that contributed to the Prime Minister declaring the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) a global Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management at the UNCCD COP-14 in 2019. His identification of 139 superior, crook-free Plus Trees of Thespesia populnea (Poovarasu) and 155 of Haldina cordifolia (Kadambu) has established valuable genetic resources for quality timber production. He has also developed cost-effective propagation techniques and advanced innovations in clonal seed orchards and digital forestry analytics, including a patented method for estimating tree mean diameter using digital images.
His contributions to biodiversity conservation include documenting 1,128 sacred groves in Alappuzha district and highlighting their rich botanical diversity, comparable to that of Silent Valley. He has also devoted more than two decades to conserving and restoring his ancestral sacred grove at Haripad. His broader research includes mangrove conservation, forest landscape restoration, river rejuvenation, and sustainable forest resource management.
Dr Warrier has published 327 scientific papers and contributed to national forestry assessments, policy initiatives, and international research collaborations. His research has strengthened the scientific basis for tree improvement, sustainable plantation management and the conservation of forest genetic resources. He has also worked to make scientific knowledge accessible through environmental education, public outreach and science communication. He has also composed several environmental anthems for the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Kerala Forest Department, and performed ‘Music from Wood’ for the United Nations FAO’s International Day of Forests Celebrations in 2022.
His distinguished career has earned several national and international recognitions, including the ICFRE National Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research in Forestry (2019), the Rolla S. Rao National Award (2010) for outstanding original research on biodiversity conservation in India, and the Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Global Award (2026) for his contributions to scientific publishing and editorial leadership.
Dr Warrier’s contributions align with 10 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and support the objectives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) by restoring degraded lands, conserving native biodiversity and forest genetic resources, promoting sustainable forestry practices, and advancing nature-based livelihoods.
The International Iconic Scientist Award recognises Dr Warrier’s sustained scientific contributions and his commitment to translating forestry research into practical outcomes for biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, rural livelihoods and sustainable development.
Family: Dr Kannan Warrier is the son of the late Sreedevi Warrier of Thrippakkudathu Variyam, Haripad, and the late Prof. N. M. C. Warrier of Keezhthrikkovil Variyam, Puliyoor.
