ASHOK WARRIER

Mr. Ashok Warrier (1958 – 2025) was born to Shri TVK Warrier, Thekkepatt Warriam, Manisseri and Smt. Savithri Warrier, Puthan Warriam, Ottapalam, Palakkad District, Kerala.

Ashok had his formal school education in various schools in New Delhi. After completion of graduation in science from Delhi University, he did his Masters in Political Science.

He took up his first government job in the AGCR office at Shimla. Later, he qualified in the Assistant Grade Exam and went on to join the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. He started his world sojourn as a Diplomat with his first posting to Beijing in 1985.

Ashok married Sunita Warrier of Kavapara Madhattil Warriam in 1986 and they were later blessed with a son, Piyush and daughter, Pavitra.

He continued his journey in the diplomatic service of Government of India for around 35 years while holding various important positions and assignments from Attache, Second Secretary, First Secretary to Director, serving in different Indian Embassies like China, Belgium, Germany, Philippines, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc.

In the year 2015, Ashok was elevated to the post of Ambassador of Democratic Republic of Congo. While holding this important assignment, he was also given additional charge as Ambassador to Republic of Congo, Gabon and Central African Republic.

He had the honour and privilege of meeting the then President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, before officially taking up as the Indian Ambassador at Congo. During his tenure at various Indian Missions, he met and interacted closely with many important dignitaries, Heads of States, Political leaders, Artists, Celebrities and the like.

While serving as the Ambassador at Congo, he successfully dealt with various sensitive and volatile political and socio-political situations.

After putting in 38 years of dedicated service with the Government of India, he retired as Indian Ambassador in the year 2018.

During his long career, Ashok covered a wide range of activities spanning administration, trade and commerce, information and publicity, consular and culture and also in the area of counter terrorism. He also represented the Government of India in various international forums like International Energy Forum, Global Counter Terrorism Forum, ASEAN Regional Forum, UNIDO etc.

Ashok and Sunita settled down in Alwaye, Kerala, post his retirement. He continued with his interest for reading and writing and was a regular columnist with dailies like The Deccan Herald, The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Tribune and The week. He published his first book titled “Negotiating the Thousand Glories” in the year 2024 and his next book “From Ganges to Kurukshetra” is under publication. All his articles published in various journals have been compiled into a book under the title “Thoughts in Print”.

Ashok was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Cancer in the year 2023. After two years of fighting with the dreaded disease, he left his body on 25th of December, 2025.

Ashok, man with a charming smile and infectious laughter, was an orator par excellence. He loved long conversations with old and the young alike on topics ranging from human values, Indian and international politics, education system, cricket, religion, films etc.

His family, friends and colleagues will always remember him for his positive outlook and loving personality.

അശോക് വാര്യർ

ശ്രീ. അശോക് വാര്യർ (1958–2025) കേരളത്തിലെ പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പാലത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുത്തൻ വാരിയം സ്വദേശിനിയായ ശ്രീമതി സാവിത്രി വാര്യറുടെയും, മനിശ്ശേരിയിലെ തെക്കേപ്പാട്ട് വാരിയം സ്വദേശിയായ ടി.വി.കെ. വാര്യറുടെയും മകനായി ജനിച്ചു.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഔപചാരിക സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിലെ വിവിധ സ്കൂളുകളിലായിരുന്നു. ഡൽഹി സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് സയൻസിൽ ബിരുദം നേടിയ ശേഷം, രാഷ്ട്രീയശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും നേടി.

ശിംലയിലെ AGCR ഓഫീസിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ആദ്യ സർക്കാർ സേവനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് ഗ്രേഡ് പരീക്ഷയിൽ വിജയം നേടിയ അദ്ദേഹം ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിലെ വിദേശകാര്യ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിൽ (Ministry of External Affairs) സേവനം തുടർന്നു. 1985-ൽ ബെയ്ജിംഗിലേക്കുള്ള ആദ്യ നിയമനത്തോടെ ഒരു നയതന്ത്രജ്ഞനായി അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര യാത്ര ആരംഭിച്ചു.

1986-ൽ കവപ്പാറ മാധത്തില്ല് വാരിയം സ്വദേശിനിയായ സുനിത വാര്യറുമായി അദ്ദേഹം വിവാഹിതനായി. ഈ ദാമ്പത്യത്തിൽ പിയൂഷ് എന്ന മകനും പവിത്ര എന്ന മകളും അനുഗ്രഹമായി ലഭിച്ചു.

ഇന്ത്യാ സർക്കാരിന്റെ നയതന്ത്ര സേവനത്തിൽ ഏകദേശം 35 വർഷത്തോളം അദ്ദേഹം അറ്റാഷേ, സെക്കന്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി, ഫസ്റ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി, ഡയറക്ടർ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രധാന പദവികൾ വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ചൈന, ബെൽജിയം, ജർമനി, ഫിലിപ്പീൻസ്, ഈജിപ്ത്, സൗദി അറേബ്യ, കുവൈത്ത് എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള വിവിധ ഇന്ത്യൻ ദൗത്യകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.

2015-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക് റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ഓഫ് കോൺഗോയിലെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അംബാസഡറായി നിയമിതനായി. ഈ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തത്തിനൊപ്പം റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ഓഫ് കോൺഗോ, ഗാബോൺ, സെൻട്രൽ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ റിപ്പബ്ലിക് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അംബാസഡറുടെ അധിക ചുമതലയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഏൽപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

കോംഗോയിലെ ഇന്ത്യൻ അംബാസഡറായി ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ചുമതലയേൽക്കുന്നതിന് മുൻപ്, അന്നത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രപതി ശ്രീ. പ്രണബ് മുഖർജിയെയും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ശ്രീ. നരേന്ദ്ര മോദിയെയും സന്ദർശിക്കാനുള്ള ബഹുമതിയും അവസരവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു. വിവിധ ഇന്ത്യൻ ദൗത്യകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച കാലയളവിൽ, നിരവധി രാഷ്ട്രതലവന്മാരെയും രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതാക്കളെയും കലാകാരന്മാരെയും പ്രശസ്ത വ്യക്തികളെയും അദ്ദേഹം അടുത്തറിയുകയും സംവദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

കോംഗോയിലെ അംബാസഡറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നതിനിടെ, രാഷ്ട്രീയപരമായും സാമൂഹിക-രാഷ്ട്രീയപരമായും അതീവ സങ്കീർണ്ണവും അസ്ഥിരവുമായ സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം വിജയകരമായി കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തു.

ഇന്ത്യാ സർക്കാരിന് 38 വർഷത്തെ സമർപ്പിത സേവനം നൽകിയ ശേഷം, 2018-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഇന്ത്യൻ അംബാസഡറായി വിരമിച്ചു.

തന്റെ ദീർഘമായ സേവനകാലത്ത് ഭരണനിർവഹണം, വ്യാപാരം, വാണിജ്യം, വിവര-പ്രചാരണം, കോൺസുലർ സേവനങ്ങൾ, സംസ്കാരം, ഭീകരവിരുദ്ധ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ഊർജ ഫോറം, ഗ്ലോബൽ കൗണ്ടർ ടെററിസം ഫോറം, ആസിയാൻ റീജിയണൽ ഫോറം, UNIDO തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വേദികളിൽ ഇന്ത്യാ സർക്കാരിനെ അദ്ദേഹം പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

വിരമിച്ച ശേഷം അശോകും സുനിതയും ആലുവ, കേരളത്തിൽ സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കി. വായനയിലും എഴുത്തിലും ഉള്ള തന്റെ താത്പര്യം അദ്ദേഹം തുടർന്നു. The Deccan Herald, The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Tribune, The Week തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രമുഖ പത്രങ്ങളിലും മാസികകളിലും സ്ഥിരം കോളമിസ്റ്റായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.

2024-ൽ “Negotiating the Thousand Glories” എന്ന തന്റെ ആദ്യ പുസ്തകം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. “From Ganges to Kurukshetra” എന്ന അടുത്ത പുസ്തകം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തിനൊരുങ്ങുകയാണ്. വിവിധ ജേണലുകളിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ലേഖനങ്ങൾ “Thoughts in Print” എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു പുസ്തകമായി സമാഹരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

2023-ൽ അപൂർവവും അതിവേഗം പടരുന്നതുമായ കാൻസർ രോഗം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചു. രണ്ട് വർഷത്തെ ധീരമായ പോരാട്ടത്തിന് ശേഷം, 2025 ഡിസംബർ 25-ന് അദ്ദേഹം ഈ ലോകത്തോട് വിടപറഞ്ഞു.

ആകർഷകമായ പുഞ്ചിരിയും പകർച്ചവ്യാധിപോലുള്ള ചിരിയും ഉള്ള അശോക് വാര്യർ, മികച്ച വാഗ്മിയും പ്രഭാഷകനുമായിരുന്നു. മനുഷ്യ മൂല്യങ്ങൾ, ഇന്ത്യൻ-അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര രാഷ്ട്രീയം, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, ക്രിക്കറ്റ്, മതം, സിനിമ തുടങ്ങിയ വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ മുതിർന്നവരോടും യുവാക്കളോടും ഒരുപോലെ ദീർഘസംവാദങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഏറെ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സദ്ഭാവനയും സ്നേഹപരമായ വ്യക്തിത്വവും കുടുംബവും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും സഹപ്രവർത്തകരും എന്നും സ്മരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.
