Rashmi – The Rising of  a Superstar

Rashmi Vijayan is just like any other bubbly college going youth, enjoys her outings with friends and cheers for her institute in whatever they participate. She is quite studious and has received commendations from her teachers on her academic performance. She has quite a creative mind - no wonder, she has chosen Media & Communications as her subject for her bachelor’s degree that she is pursuing at the MAHE, Manipal University, Dubai Campus at the Academic City, Dubai.

But what makes Rashmi different from any other girl that we know, is her immense talent as a singer. This versatile singer has already made a mark for herself among the budding talents in the U.A.E.

Rashmi participated in the Super Star Global 2007  at Amrita TV, the musical reality show and reached the final 11 among over 20,000 contestants from all over the world.

In the recently concluded Indian Idol 3  (2007) on the Sony TV, Rashmi was selected to the final 28 contestants in this prestigious musical talent hunt. Rashmi won the hearts of millions of music lovers and appreciation from eminent lyricist Mr. Javed Akhtar and noted singer Udit Narayan.

Her recent achievements also include the REEFMALL RADIOSTAR contest by the radio4fm network (UAE) where she pairing with Karan was adjudged the best duet singer from a field of over 2500 singers.

Also at the FORD FUSION STAR- a truly multi national Western singing competition conducted by Ford and Fusion Dubai for selecting the singing sensation of the U.A.E., Rashmi reached the semi finals from a field of over 500 singers of various nationalities.

Who can forget the Runner up prize that she notched up at the Zee T V Saregamapa Middle East Muqabla 2006, knocking away stiff competition that included singers from all over the Gulf and winning accolades from such luminaries as Kumar Sanu, Adesh Srivastava, Jatin Pandit and Ismail Darbar, not to forget the ever charming Shaan who hosted the show. With her immense confidence and beautiful voice trained in both Carnatic (by Sri Babu John) and Hindustani music(by Sri Shiva Iyer), Rashmi captivated the huge crowd that cheered for her, episode after episode through to the mega finals !

Accolades and appreciation are nothing new to this talented emerging star, who has in the span of just a couple of years achieved what could be the envy of any artist! In October,2005, Rashmi was picked by Shankar Mahadevan himself to sing along with him on stage during the prestigious show Dhadak Dhadak to the tunes of the famous Musician trio of Shankar -Ehsan –Loy.

Rashmi also enthralled the audience singing in languages ranging from Malayalam ,Tamil, Hindi, English and  Arabic at various cultural functions in the U.A.E like the Eid celebrations at Al Nasr Leisureland, Dubai, the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the UAE Exchange Centre, the DSWG Musical Nite,Alumnii meet of NSSCE and KERA -to name a few, and in the popular TV show Melody Bytes aired by Kairali TV .

Rashmi, the only daughter of Ragini (ex-Indian Airlines employee) and R. Vijayan Warrier (a mechanical engineer from, Palakkad Anthimahakalankavil Variem, presently working with INMA Dubai and member of Dubai Sharjah Warrier Group, Unit #79, UAE) was also declared the winner in the girls section of the Musical competition held by Amrita TV        (Paadam Namukku Paadam), which was aired on the channel’s network.

The ECHO FEST-2006, which is the ultimate arena where 80 odd musical institutes of the U.A.E. lock their horns and compete, saw Rashmi, representing Symphony Music Institute, again at her best, winning the coveted Echo Estrella ( Kala Thilakam) –that too for the second time!

Rashmi was the only Panel singer selected from UAE for the Hindi musical show hosted by Sri ANNU KAPOOR on the Pakistani TV Channel GEO TV

Achievements and awards have not affected this enthusiastic and friendly teenager who says, with all humility, that she has miles to go before she sleeps. Right now, she wants to just concentrate on her studies and keep practicing her classical lessons.

Rashmi is busy now a days with series of stage shows across UAE showcasing her singing talent to the music loving audience of UAE. Her recent show was ‘Dhundubi’ 2008, organised by Radio Asia, UAE on their 15th Anniversary. She shared the stage with Malayalam’s vanampadi Vanijayaram, Biju Narayanan, Violin whiz kid and music director Bhalabhaskar and Cine Actor Prithviraj. The Event is one which all the music lovers in UAE enjoyed; it was held at Al Nasr Leisure Land, Dubai in May 2008.

Rashmi has rocked the audience with her soulful singing and performance through out and is continuing to do so still, as you are reading about her she will be definitely adding new feather’s to her cap. We all at DSWG(Warrier Samajam Unit #79 UAE) is proud of this budding talent, and are sure that she is going to reach the stars and beyond with her versatile in born talents.

BEST OF LUCK TO RASHMI!

Students of Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier got together to fete their teacher who has always strived to bring the maddalam to the fore.

Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier is the author of `Maddalamenna Mangalavadyam.'

GALA CELEBRATIONS: Panchavadyam by Chottanikkara Vijayan Marar and his group was one of the programmes that was organised for a function to felicitate maddalam artiste Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier

Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier has always walked alone. While many around him were content to remain faces in a crowd, Sankara Warrier ploughed a lonely furrow that was scarred and different. It left an indelible imprint on his life, his art.

A new dimension

The maddalam, especially in Kathakali, has always been overpowered by the chenda. Sankara Warrier gave this instrument a new dimension, striving to bring it to the fore. In pursuing this goal, he has, very often, rubbed people the wrong way. His determination was often dubbed as arrogance. His plain speak often misconstrued as an affront. He was bypassed for recognitions and awards. But Sankara Warrier ploughed on.

Today, if the maddalam has found its rightful place and those who play this instrument a newfound dignity, it is largely because of Sankara Warrier. He, through years of rigorous training, has evoked the speaking quality of this high precision instrument. He developed a style that was subtly emotive and he proved that many interpretations were possible through this instrument. All that he learned and more find mention in his book `Maddalamenna Mangalavadyam.' This is the only comprehensive guide to the playing and understanding of this instrument.

This master percussionist is also a disciplined teacher. In a career spanning four decades, Sankara Warrier has trained a legion of disciples. They got together at the Kalikota Palace, Thripunithura, to honour Sankara Warrier by presenting him with a `veerashrinkala.'

Warrier plays the maddalam for `Ushachitralekha.'

"I put forward only two conditions when I was told of this event. One, it should be held at Thripunithura and that the honours should be done, if possible, by the head of the royal family of erstwhile Cochin," said Sankara Warrier.

And he had reasons for this. Thripunithura and the members of the royal family were mainly responsible for the progress of this artiste.

"I had a terrible childhood. It was one of hunger and poverty. Whenever I think of my native village of Thillankeri (Kannur district), these memories haunt me. I had to abandon my studies midway, take up various jobs and wander from place to place. It was Thripunithura that gave me a new life. I reached here with just a shirt and a dhothi. It was some of the young members of the family who gave me a new set of clothes. They gave me a place to stay; when my leg swelled, and oozed they took care of me. It was at the Poornathrayeesa Temple that I first played on a hide-wrapped percussion instrument. My marriage was held here; again all arrangements were made by my friends and well-wishers in this town. I owe a lot to this place."

Festive look

Thripunithura wore a festive look as artistes, scholars, and passionate fans of classical arts flocked to the venue right from morning itself. The day kicked off with a `maddalakeli' in which 12 youngsters, all of them disciples of Sankara Warrier, fused in rhythm. Ashtapadi by Payyannur Krishnamani Marar and a seminar on the `Relevance of the Maddalam among Kerala's Musical Instruments,' were held in the morning.

The evening began with a panchavadyam by Chottanikkara Vijayan Marar and his group. Sankara Warrier and his wife, along with other luminaries, were led to the venue in a ceremonial procession. The Kalikota Palace was packed to capacity.

The Veerashrinkala award function began with Sankara Warrier offering obeisance to his gurus, Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambisan and Cherppulasserry Shivan.

Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, who inaugurated the function, dwelt on the unique qualities of Sankara Warrier. He felt that the gifted percussionist deserved this honour for his understanding of the Kathakali stage, his timely responses to mudras and intelligent innovations. Ramavarma Kochaniyan Thampuran adorned Sankara Warrier with the Veerashrinkala.

A superb `melapadam,' a virtual rhythmic rhapsody, featuring Mattannur Sankarankutty, Mattannur Sreeraj (chenda), Cherppulasserry Shivan, Kotakkal Ravi (maddalam), Kottakkal Madhu and Kalamandalam Vinod (vocal) sent the audience into raptures.

There was more for those who stayed back. Four Kathakali plays - `Ushachitralekha,' `Kalyanasougandikam,' `Balivadham' and `Pattabhishekam' - in which doyens like Kalamandalam Gopi, Kottakkal Sivaraman, Kalamandalam Rajasekaharan, and other eminent artistes took part, were staged. Gopi's Bheema in the Shouryagunam episode in `Kalyanasougandikam,' a rare one by the thespian, and Sankara Warrier's maddalam for `Ushachitralekha' were stand out performances.

The strains of the Kathakali padams, the pulsating beats of the chenda and the maddalam, wafted through the silent night, into the early hours of dawn. In between all this Sankara Warrier was meeting people, smiling and chatting with that typical north Malabar twang.

Dwarak Warrier

Dwarak, also known as Hari, is the superstar amongst us mortals. He is without doubt the most sought after sound designer and mixing engineer in Mumbai. He has worked on the best of films and with the best directors in India. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India and a biker, he loves to go on rides but his busy schedule has him working in the studio most of the time. Hari is a soft-spoken guy and will speak only if there is a need to, otherwise he can easily go without talking for days. Of course his job requires him to be a keen listener! The mystery on why he agreed to work on our humble documentary is still not solved. Maybe he couldn't refuse us or maybe because the film was about a motorcycle journey. We think that the nice and sweet guy he is, he just couldn't refuse us and see us walk away dejected.

An Interview with Mr. BS Warrier, Former Joint Director of Technical Education, Kerala.

·         You are more popular among students than among members of the Warrier community. Why?

I wonder whether I am popular in any group. Since I have been carrying out career guidance for many years through popular media, both print and electronic, I am known to a large number of students and parents.

·         Could you please throw some light on your parents and early background?

Born in 1937, as the son of noted Sanskrit scholar and writer of the yesteryear, Chunakkara K Rama Warrier. He was well versed in English literature as well. Among his works, Radha in two volumes, an innovative adaptation of the famous novel The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins won great admiration in those days. During the fag end of his life he had composed his autobiography in Sanskrit verse !  My mother Thulasi from Alleppey passed away in her thirties, when I was just three years of age. My father followed her when I was seven. We were five --- two brothers and three sisters. A brother and a sister are no more.

I was brought up by my uncles. Looking back, I often feel that our old joint family system had its own strength; it offered good security to women and children, especially in times of adversity.

·         It means that you had lost both your parents by the time you were at the very young age of seven. Was it not a handicap in your life?

Perhaps it was just the other way. It is true that I used to feel different when I looked at friends of my age. My loss was terrible. At the same time, it generated confidence in facing problems or crises. The feeling that you are alone without parental support or backing steels your nerves. I gratefully remember the great exercises in affection done by my uncles and mother's sister in filling the great void in my life. But for them I would have been nowhere in life.

·         What is your present family composition?

Married S. Madhuri of Venmony Warriem in 1964. She retired from her service in the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation in 2002.

We have two sons:

1. SR Warrier (Principal Consultant and Group Leader - Insurance, Infosys Technologies Ltd, Bangalore). Married to Praveena Warrier, Cost & Works Accountant ,They have a son, Jishnu

 2. SS Warrier (Travel Consultant, Linkair India, Technopark, Trivandrum). Married to D. Kavitha, Advocate. They have a daughter, Gouri.

·         What is your educational background?

Not much !  Graduated in Electrical Engineering from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum in 1958.

Acquired PG Diploma in Technical Teaching specializing in pedagogy, in 1970, under experts from the UK.

·         Where did you start your career?

Served as an operation and maintenance engineer for three years in the hydel projects under the Kerala State Electricity Board.  Thereafter moved to the Department of Technical Education and held various positions from Lecturer to Joint Director of Technical Education, Government of Kerala. Took voluntary retirement from service in 1991.

Worked as Chief Electrical Engineer in a U.S. based international company in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, During the period 1981- '85.

·         Could you tell us your experience as a writer?

I am not a writer in the conventional sense of the word.

·         But you have been writing for a long time.

Yes. Writing and publishing regularly for quite a number of years.

I had developed writing as a hobby right from a very young age. As a freelance journalist, I have published numerous articles on technology, science, applied economics, career, and other subjects of social relevance - in leading journals, both in English and Malayalam.  I had for some time kept a book review column in the Indian Express  -- reviewing Malayalam books in English.

Authored eleven books in Malayalam on Engineering, technology, sport, applied economics, rehabilitation and career - guidance, and one book in English on guidance.

·         What are your popular titles?

Three popular titles now in the book market are Vijayathinte Padavukal, Aa joali engane netaam? (both from DC Books), and Ethu coursinu cheranam? (Rainbow Books)

·         You are known better for your columns than for books.

I have been running a weekly guidance column for the past fourteen years in Malayala Manorama daily, without a single break. The main objective is disseminating information relating to opportunities in higher education, various professional avenues, and career building. Currently, I run a weekly column in the Hindu. Earlier I had run similar columns in theIndian Express and Mathrubhumi dailies.

I always felt that the press is very generous in helping me.

·         You were in certain TV channels as well ?

Yes. I have telecast a weekly career-guidance episode over Asianet TV for four years.

·         Your best experience in writing?

I said, I have no claims as a 'writer'. Even though I have been publishing substantial matter every week, the most thrilling experience in writing is the one I had when I saw a letter written by me in the Madras edition of Indian Express, while I was a schoolboy of 11. I showed the audacity (stupidity) to criticise a person of the eminence of Rajaji, and the Express published it!

If I have any flair for writing, it is mainly because of the hard drill in Sanskrit forced on me by my late father. He started it with Sidharoopam when I was three. He was teaching me verses from the original Valmikiramayana when I was six. My brother and sister also had undergone this tough mill.

·         Any award?

Awards have become ubiquitous these days. They don't have the glitter and glamour they once had, perhaps because of the proliferation of awards or the suspicion that many awards are stage managed. Those who do not succeed in securing awards, say that they value the people's award, implying thereby  people's recognition.

To answer your direct question, I would tell you that I am the recipient of the Science Journalism Award of Kerala Government 1993, Kavyavedi Award 2003, and State Resources Centre Award 2004.

.

·         "Vijaythinte padavukal" has been selected for the State Resources Centre's award. What prompted you to opt for educational columns rather than research work?

I do not quite follow your link between the two. There were limitations in the facilities for higher education in engineering when I got my degree in 1958. Further, there were domestic constraints in the matter of sending me for higher education in far off places. Once you plunge into a routine job and spend a few years, a revival for pursuits of higher academic attainment including research is often hard. I fell a victim to this situation.

But no regrets on this score, since I could live a useful life rendering service to the community in my own humble way.

You ask me why I went for educational guidance. My modest background had taught me that many of our youngsters did not attain the heights they deserved, primarily because of their lack of awareness of the myriad opportunities. While handling admission to engineering colleges and other technical institutions in my capacity as a Joint Director of Technical Education, I was stunned by the depth of ignorance of even well educated parents. So I thought of launching some effort in career guidance, at a time when our people were not aware of such a systematic effort. In fact, many of my colleagues asked me the strength on which I had been writing on all kinds of courses and programmes. What I had been doing was only garnering facts from the right sources, getting the information verified for its accuracy, and disseminating them to the public through the media. Often I would give only indications. It was up to the parents to gather comprehensive details in their chosen fields.

The book Vijaythinte padavukal is not a book on careers, but simple description of personality factors and right steps to success. Great thoughts from illustrious people have been occasionally indicated, as a catalyst for motivation of the young. I remember one reviewer wrote that this is a book to be read by children from seven to seventy !

·         Did you have any role model who inspired you in your career / personal life?

I could not find any role model. But, as most of us are, I also have been a close observer of men and matters that give insight on many things in life. I learnt lessons from many. I would learn from any person, if I find him to be worthy of emulation in one thing or another.

·         Have you ever worked overseas ; if yes what did you learn from your stint?

As indicated earlier, I worked for five years in a large international company in Saudi Arabia. That period gave me a wonderful opportunity to expose myself to the latest trends in my selected field of technology. Those were days before globalisation in India.  I could handle many engineering products of quality never used or even seen here those days.

Much more than this, is that my close movement with men belonging to various nationalities - Asian, African, European, and American -- helped me substantially in shedding my wrong notions of superiority of all values that are Indian. My own company had employees from twenty nationalities. We often believe that our values are invariably superior to all others. We may show more tolerance and space to the mores and customs of other ethnic groups. We should be open minded to learn from them. They may have their strong points as well.

·         How easy or difficult was in those days to get jobs which are of your choice?

Would you believe that the Electricity Department used to take the names of the students who had appeared in the final year engineering degree examination from the University, and offer provisional appointment, pending the announcement of results?

Soon after graduation, I went to Bombay for an interview. A relation of mine had given a newspaper advertisement in the 'Situation Wanted' column. I went for four interviews in a week, and all the four employers asked me to join straightaway in their respective organisations. But I came off, since I preferred to live in Kerala.

·         Did you ever at any point of time feel like changing your career?

Yes, I changed my job in 1961-- from the job of an engineer to that of an engineering teacher. In 1991

I relinquished my government job.

·         Was there any turning point in your career?

My transition to the teaching job gave me ample opportunities to be in the world of books of diverse tastes.

·         Can you share the most wonderful moment in your life as a noted career consultant?

There are many instances of people thanking me after several years for the information I had provided either through my columns or directly. I should not mention names, so I may be excused for not being specific on this one point.

Noted or otherwise, I am no 'career consultant', since I very rarely give any personal guidance to individuals. This is mainly because of time constraint.

·         What opportunity does the growing power of internet pose for an ordinary Indian?

Today the cliché, 'information at the tip of your finger' is literally true. But one has to learn how to utilise the gift effectively, with a sense of discrimination. What a research scholar used to gain in 'literature study' in two years may now be had in less than two weeks. 'Knowledge is power' is a western adage. Knowledge is pleasure is a piece of eastern thought. We may have to realise today's formula, 'Information is power'. But there are four other valuable I's too : Intelligence, Innovation, Insight,  and Intuition.

·         What advice would you give to the next generation of students?

No one likes to be advised. But I should share my feeling that our boys and girls should make an incessant effort to widen the horizons of their knowledge in their chosen field, to update related information in these days of galloping advances in knowledge, and to develop their soft skills. They may lay emphasis on getting themselves organized and on maintaining accuracy and precision in whatever they do. One should always try to excel in whatever he does. "if you are a worm, try to be a glow worm."

·         What is the message for our community?

I am not sure whether I am competent to give messages. But in the light of my experience in the career field, I would suggest that parents should not force options of study on their children. The aptitude and the learning ability of the child should necessarily be assessed objectively before the crucial decision. It should never be a product of the parents' whims or their anxiety to fulfill their own unfulfilled dreams through the children.

Diwan Sankara Warrier

Sri Edakkunni Sankara Warrier former Diwan of Cochin is the stalwart behind Edakkunni temple construction. It was he who built this temple in the present form He also performed the Kalasam. He was an able administrator and during his period Cochin state had all around progress. He died in 1856 after a brief illness.

Brief profile
Sri Sankara Warrier, born in january 1797 who succeeded Venkatasubayya as Diwan held office for 17 years. He was an able administrator and reformer and the reforms introduced by him helped to raise Cochin to the front rank of the well-governed states of India. A comprehensive program of public works were carried out. In 1854 a proclamation was issued abolishing slavery and emancipating all the slaves in the state. Social services like educational and public health also claimed Sankara Warrier's attention. In 1845 the first Elementary English School Raja's school was opened at Ernakulam-the nucleus of the Maharaja's College of the present day. The period of the Diwanship of Sankara Warrier was of liberal and progressive administration. The canal from Aranattukara to Kokkalai was built during the reign of Diwan Sankarawarrier (1840-1856). The credit for making Thrissur as a model town should go to Diwan Sankara Warrier(1840 - 1856). The Diwan vigorously pursued a programme of public works, which included a network of roads with strong bridges, traveler’s bungalows and irrigation bunds. It was during his period that wheeled traffic was established between Thrissur and Coimbatore. When, on a fine morning in 1844, twelve bullock carts laden with goods from Coimbatore arrived at Thrissur, there was probably more excitements than when the first train passed through the town almost six decades later. English schools and hospitals was introduced during the period of Diwan Sankara Warrier. He died on 23rd October 1856 after a brief illness. He was cremated with full military honours.

DIWAN SANKARA WARRIER

Long before Independence our country was divided in to about 600 small kingdoms and were ruled by Maharajas with the help of British Among these territories, Kochi State was the only one ruled excellently and efficiently. For this the people of Kochi owes a lot to Diwan Sankara Warrier.  1840-1856 and his son Diwan Sankunni Menon 1860–1879.

Diwan Sankara Warrier.

From an era of King’s rule, Sankara warrier laid the foundation for a modern government. His rule was a silver lining at a time when most of the State rulers were corrupt, and the law and order was very poor. The
Madras Government, The Board of Directors and Secretary of State were full of praise for his rule.He was as famous as Sri. Salar jung, Sri. Dinakar Rao, Madhava Rao,Sheshayya Shastri, e.t.c.

SANKARA WARRIER was born on 22, January 1798, at the Edakkunni Wariam Tharavadu,at Edakkunni village, Thrissur Taluk.  At the age of 18,he left for Ernakulam and joined as a clerk in
Appeal Court. In 1818, he got a better job in Hajur Office. In1820, he joined in Diwan Nanjappayya’s Office.
After Nanjappayya, Edamana Sankara Menon came as Diwan and Casamajor came as resident of
Kochi. Sankara warrier was made Diwan Peshkar . In January 20th,1840,at the age of 42 years,Sankara warrier was made the Diwan of Kochi State after Venkita subbaya, who had been removed from the office after a dispute with the Maharaja. After assuming the Office, Finance, Public works, Agriculture, Trade-development, and Law& order were his priorities.

FINANCE
At the time of taking the charge, the balance amount at the Treasury was  Rs.371/-. At the end of the 2nd year, it was 1.5 lakhs. In 18 years, the balance had raised to Rs. 11 lakhs. He achieved this, not by cutting the expenditure for the welfare of the people, but by reducing the unnecessary expenditure of the palace and administration.

PUBLIC WORKS

He made a chain of roads throughout the state. Most of the old bridges were made at his time. He made a lot of tourist bunglows and sathrams  in the state.A road was made connecting  Thrissur and Coimbatore. Travel between Kochi and Coimbatore became easy.

AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Most of the lakes (water reservoirs) we see in Kochi state were made during his time. More than thousand acres of barren land were made into agricultural land. He built a dam on Chittur river. About 2000 acres of land were irrigated by this.

DEVELOPMENT OF TRADE

Improvement of transport helped in trade development. Imposing taxes for every small thing was stopped. The taxes for rice and other food items were abolished. A port was built at Malipuram and income throughcustoms duties were increased. Goods transport between Thrissur andCoimbatore started for the first time .The development of watercanals-Aranattukara canal, Thevara –Kundannoor canals made thetransportation of goods cheaper and easier.

LAW AND ORDER

He stopped slavery which was prevalent in our society for a long time.  He stopped it by bringing a law against slavery. He could control corruption in the administrative system to a great extent by taking apt actions.
After 16 years of eventful rule, he died on october21st 1856. Even today the members of Edakkunni warriam remembers him on this day with proper rituals (Vechu namaskaram) at Edakkunni temple.

Dr. P. K. Warrier is a name closely associated to a string of exemplary ayurveda practitioners and physicians of Kerala, who were responsible for the resurrection of ayurveda in Kerala. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of one of the largest and most trusted institutions of its kind in India; the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala in the District of Malappuram in North Kerala. Dr. P. K. Warrier is a senior nephew of Vaidyaratnam Dr. P. S. Warrier, who established the Arya Vaidya Sala at Kottakkal in 1902. Since the beginning of the ayurveda centre, the name Kottakkal has become synonymous with ayurveda, and is an institution offering authentic ayurvedic medicines and treatments to patients from all over India and abroad.

Taking the reigns of the Arya Vaidya Sala from his elder brother Mr. Madhava Warrier in 1954, Dr. P. K. Warrier currently spearheads the activities of the centre at Kottakkal, where he is also the chief physician. His is today a respected name in the field of ayurveda, and has lived up to the reputation and the expectations of his predecessors in the practice and popularization of ayurevda. The altruistic services of Dr. P. K. Warrier as the Managing Trustee of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala for nearly five decades have transformed the organization into a much admired and a highly professional one. The Arya Vaidya Sala recently celebrated its centenary, which is yet another significant milestone in its existence.

People from far and near visit the Arya Vaidya Sala at Kottakkal including those from European countries, Middle-East, USA, and South-East Asia for various purposes such as research, treatment, learning etc. As years passed, access to Arya Vaidya Sala has been made easier with its operations expanding to other parts of the country, and has its presence in major Indian cities like New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Coimbatore.

In recognition to his outstanding contributions to the popularity and advancement of ayurveda, Dr. P. K. Warrier has been honoured with many awards and distinctions. He is the recipient of the coveted national honour ‘Padmashri’ instituted by the Government of India. Other notable awards and recognitions include the International Bhoopalman Singh Award from Nepal; the ‘Dr. Poulos Mar Gregorios Award’ for his contribution to the development of Ayurveda; the prestigious Dhanvanthari Award; and the ‘Management Leadership Award’ award instituted by Kerala Management Association (KMA).

According to Dr. P. K. Warrier, the guiding visions of Arya Vaidya Sala centers on the preservation and promotion of ayurveda by providing genuine ayurvedic medicines, treatment, education and research facilities, and sustenance of ayurvedic system of health care. An accomplished physician and one of the few authorities on ayurveda in India, Dr. Warrier is widely reckoned for his initiatives to transform the traditional approaches in the practice of ayurveda in tune with modern times. The establishments under Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala today reflect this, and is evident in the form of computerized hospital administration, state-of-the-art drug manufacturing units, modern dispatch method for medicines, setting up of herbal gardens, establishment of research and development wing etc.

Dr. P. K. Warrier is well aware of the need for modern ayurveda research. He believes that this should have the involvement of necessary materials and methods of both modern medicine and ayurveda. According to this eminent physician, the primary objective should be the exploration and revalidation of the inherent strengths of ayurveda for the benefit of humanity.

Dr. Warrier is no doubt a visionary ayurveda physician, and has firm aspirations, with a focus primarily on research and development, augmentation of medicinal plant cultivation and continuation of the work on health care. Besides this, taking ayurveda to the status of principal health care system all over the world is his personal goal, and his altruistic efforts in the past and the present are clear indications towards this goal.
